What is Excessive Hair Growth (Hirsutism)?

Hirsutism, meaning excessive hair growth, occurs when women experience male-pattern hair growth. In addition to hair growth on the chest, hips, and abdomen, as well as the mustache and beard area; dark and coarse hair growth is observed on the arms and legs.   What Causes Excessive Hair Growth? Hirsutism, a very common problem, is often genetic and hereditary. It can develop due to an increase in male hormones or can occur when hormone levels are normal. In type 2, hair follicles are hypersensitive to testosterone. It usually appears during adolescence and increases with age. The increase in hair growth stabilizes from the age of 30 onwards. Excessive hair growth is not just an aesthetic problem. Many diseases such as abnormal prolactin hormone secretion, obesity, ovarian cysts, heart and circulatory disorders, and thyroid disorders can trigger excessive hair growth. If excessive hair growth is accompanied by metabolic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure, menstrual irregularities, excessive oiliness of the skin, problems with the pituitary gland, infertility, and growth of hands and feet, it is essential to consult an endocrinologist.
