Why Does Cradle Cap Occur in Babies?
From birth, as the baby tries to adapt to its new environment, various skin problems can occur on its skin surface. These problems are generally seen in all newborns and resolve on their own within a few months. Cradle cap, which occurs on the head, is an extremely common problem. The cause of cradle cap, which is not definitively known, develops due to Seborrheic Dermatitis, which occurs in areas where body oiliness increases.
It is not contagious and mostly disappears before the baby turns 1 year old.
It Heals on Its Own
Cradle cap, which is unrelated to feeding or hygiene conditions, consists of oily crust formations on the baby's scalp, particularly concentrated on the fontanelle. The crusts are composed of a mixture of dead skin debris, skin oil, and dust. Cradle cap causes a gray or white flaky appearance. The baby does not feel pain due to cradle cap. Since cradle cap passes on its own as the protective layer of the skin develops, shampoos suitable for cradle cap treatment and formulated for sensitive skin should be used for cleaning. Brushing the baby's head gently with a soft brush increases blood circulation and ensures faster removal of the flakes.
