Mental Disorders
Acute psychoses manifest with disorders of consciousness, as in manic-depressive psychosis or delirium in mental and soul diseases. In chronic psychoses, personality disorders are added to this, with schizophrenia and paranoia forming its two sides.
As for neuroses, which are milder mental illnesses, their characteristic is mental internal conflicts that disrupt the connection with reality and symptoms that emerge as a reaction to distress, as in hysteria or obsessive neurosis. Alcoholism, drug addiction, psychopathy, and senile dementia also fall within the scope of psychiatry.
The way the same disease manifests differs according to countries and societies. Ethnopsychiatry, which examines the links between cultures and mental illnesses, aims to reach the most suitable form of treatment through this.
The American Psychiatric Association has classified mental disorders according to their symptoms in its publication, the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual. The purpose of this classification is to provide unity in various research and treatment methods in order to create a common international language.
