What is Folliculitis?
Folliculitis (inflammation of the hair follicle), caused by the bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, can develop due to many conditions. Known colloquially as barber's itch, folliculitis is a skin problem that develops around the hair follicle and is mostly superficial.
Recurrent Hair Follicle Inflammation
Folliculitis occurs in situations such as diabetes, metabolic diseases, skin problems that turn into infections, long-term use of ointments containing cortisone, bandages and wraps that prevent the skin from breathing, tight and non-breathable clothing, shaving, excessive sweating, and poor hygiene. While superficial hair follicle inflammations resolve on their own, deep and recurrent folliculitis requires treatment. Progressing hair follicle inflammations can lead to permanent scars and hair loss. Folliculitis are inflamed pimples that form around one or more hair follicles. Unlike acne formations, a hair is present in the center of a folliculitis pimple. Pain may accompany itching. The bacterium Staphylococcus aureus, with an incubation period of 1 to 2 days, causes red, pus-filled formations on the skin surface that cause itching. Treatment is carried out with antiseptic cleaning products, antibiotic creams, and antibiotics.
