Cataract
Cataracts account for approximately half of all blindness worldwide. The causes of cataracts are very diverse. Cataracts are said to occur congenitally, due to trauma, or due to old age. The symptom of a cataract is a decrease in visual acuity for distant vision rather than near vision. It causes a change in visual density and myopia in the eye as a result of the lens losing its transparency.
It allows reading without glasses for a while by eliminating the effect of presbyopia. Many complaints are also made about glare. A unilateral cataract may go unnoticed for a long time and may be discovered incidentally during an examination. The decision for surgery is made based on the patient's decision, the patient's age, and the degree of defect in the patient's eye.
The current trend is to perform surgery with local anesthesia, which the body tolerates easily. Before the artificial lens to be implanted during surgery, the lens power must be meticulously calculated in proportion to the eye length measured by ultrasound.
The exact cause of cataracts is still not understood even today.
