Why Do Stretch Marks Occur?

Stretch marks are lines that form as a result of the weakening of the elastic tissue in the skin. They are caused by many factors such as rapid weight gain and growth, pregnancy, extreme sports like mountaineering, bodybuilding, and cortisone treatment. Primarily, sudden weight changes are the main cause of stretch marks. Initially appearing pink when they first form, stretch marks eventually turn white. Stretch marks are not a medical problem; they do not pose a health issue beyond causing aesthetic discomfort. In rare cases where stretch marks are very widespread, dermatological problems may occur. In Cushing's syndrome, which is more common in women, stretch marks can form on the skin surface due to excessive cortisol secretion. Inadequate nutrition, particularly a deficiency in foods that increase collagen and elastin, leads to the loosening of the skin's connective tissue and loss of elasticity. Similarly, insufficient fluid intake and obesity also create a predisposition for stretch marks to form on the skin surface. Stretch marks that appear during adolescence generally disappear in later years if issues like sudden growth or weight changes have not occurred. Stretch marks are typically seen on the chest, abdomen, waist area, and shoulders. As the skin surface darkens due to tanning, the color of the stretch marks remains the same.
